  • What does bio mean?

    1200px-Organic-Logo.svg.png

In Europe, organic products are easily identified by the “bio” or “organic” label.

EU Organic Regulation certified organic logo (above) is marked on packaged organic products if at least 95% of its ingredients are certified organic.

This certification logo can be found on product labels, packaging or loose produce.

  • Do you offer Formula Samples?

Unfortunately, we do not offer samples at this time.

Not every formula is compatible with every baby. You will need to find the right one for your little one. Small doses are not sufficient to observe your baby’s complete reaction to a formula. It’s best to complete at least a full box.

  • Do you have a ‘bricks and mortar’ store?

To keep costs and overhead low for all of our valued customers, currently, we only sell online.

  • My doctor recommended a different formula. Why should i consider any other or even foreign formula instead?

We understand your concerns! If you take the time to read the ingredients in the most mass-produced baby formula, you’ll find the top ingredient is corn syrup. Essentially, you are feeding your baby highly processed genetically modified sugar. The Organic baby formulas offered at our site provide all of the nutrition your baby needs to grow healthy and strong without the unneeded sugar, pesticides, herbicides, and genetically modified ingredients they don’t need.

Organic Formula 9 questions
  • What does Stage PRE mean?

Stage PRE is a Stage 1 formula designed for sensitive tummies (suitable from birth).

Stages marked as “PRE” should not be confused with Premie or Preterm Birth. These formulas generally do not contain starch compared to Stage 1.

Always consult a doctor then refer to your brand’s suggested diet plan.

  • Should I move up in the stages?

As a child grows and changes, so do his nutritional requirements. To ensure your baby is getting all of the nutrients he needs to grow and thrive, we highly recommend you use the stage of formula that corresponds with his age.

Formula manufacturers like Hipp and Holle have spent many years perfecting formulations to ensure every stage of your baby’s dietary needs is met.

Please note that there is not much difference in the later stages that would warrant a switch on a specific date. You can move forward, or behind a few weeks.

  • What is Maltodextrin and why it is used in infant formulas?

Maltodextrin is a plant-based sweetener. The primary characteristics of maltodextrin is its high solubility, easy and rapid digestibility (high glycemic index), and low sweetness. These characteristics work well in baby formula. High solubility means that the powdered formula will dissolve quickly and smoothly, which makes the formula easier for a baby to drink.

Maltodextrin is derived from starch. The bigger starch macromolecules will be split into smaller units which makes maltodextrin easier to digest than starch. This is important for babies during the first months not having the capacity to digest complex carbohydrates.

The amount and the composition of carbohydrates in infant formulas are legally regulated and a minimum amount of carbohydrates is required. Without the use of maltodextrin, the baby formula would contain more lactose (milk sugar) and have a sweeter taste. Some infants are sensitive to high doses of lactose and suffer from colic when lactose enters the lower parts of the digestive tract. The mild complex structure of maltodextrin makes it easy to digest and less sweet. Since this complex structure is slower to digest, it helps satisfy your baby’s appetite for longer than other formulas. Maltodextrin is scientifically accepted as an accepted ingredient in infant formulas with no disadvantages.

  • What is DHA and is it important for my baby?

DHA is a compound that’s commonly found in breastmilk. DHA contained in Organic infant formulas are produced using Docosahexaenoic single cell oil (DHASCO). DHA oils used in the baby formula are not the same as DHA found in breast milk.

DHA and ALA are omega-3 fatty acids. DHA fatty acids include fish oil, egg oil, squid oil, and krill oil. ALA fatty acid includes walnuts, edible seeds, clary sage seed oil, algal oil, flaxseed oil, and hemp oil. DHA is a component for brain and eye tissue development. But the DHA and ALA added to most brands of infant formula is not identical in structure to the fatty acids found in breastmilk.

There have been no studies that have found a benefit to adding DHA to formula. Several published studies all conclude that adding DHA and ALA “had no proven benefit regarding vision, cognition, or physical growth.” Both breast milk and Organic formulas contain essential fatty oils for brain health.

  • Are palm and grape seed oils safe for my baby?

Yes! Palm oil is one of the few vegetable oils that’s naturally rich in saturated fat. Most other vegetable oils are rich in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. By combining palm oil with rapeseed oil and sunflower oil, the mixture provides a good fatty acid profile that meets nutritional requirements for infants.

If you have done any research on this topic, the chances are good that you found warnings regarding saturated fatty acids and promotion of mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acids.

However, infants under a year old metabolize nutrients differently than adults and older children. Fatty acids contained in human breast milk are mostly saturated. To closely mimic the composition in human breast milk and to meet legal requirements, Holle relies on the use of palm oil in the fat mixture for their infant formulas. Palm oil is one of the very few vegetable oils rich in saturated fatty acids. Many other vegetable oils are high in mono or polyunsaturated fatty acids. Using palm oil in the mixture with grape seed oil and sunflower oil offers your baby a complete, wholesome profile of fatty acid and meets all of his or her nutritional requirements.

  • What does HA (Hypoallergenic) formula mean?

HiPP HA (hypoallergenic) formulas are the latest generation of formulas designed to the particular nutritional requirements of infants being at risk of developing allergic reactions. An infant is considered to be at risk of developing allergic reactions when a direct family member (mother, father, siblings) already has an allergy.

The milk proteins of this formula are divided into small fragments (hydrolysed) which leads to much fewer allergic reactions of the immune system compared to the formula with normal cow milk proteins.

If your infant’s tummy is especially sensitive, then HiPP Hypoallergenic (HA) Combiotic is the Formula you need. HiPP HA is the first organic product that is formulated to meet the needs of children who are at risk of allergies.

Crucial to the success of prevention of allergy is that the HA formula should stay consistent in the first 12 months of your baby’s life. Even a small amount of infant formula with non-hydrolyzed protein can lead to sensitization and so jeopardize the benefits of a low-allergen diet.

  • Why are different Stages of formula available?

European infant formulas are divided into different stages. There are Stage 1 and PRE formulas specifically designed for the first months (as of birth) and follow-on formulas (Stage 2 & 3) for babies that are already getting a complementary diet.

Stage 1 and PRE formulas are designed to fully meet the baby’s needs for the first six months and can, therefore, be used as the only nutrition during that period.

The PRE formulas contain, like breastmilk, only natural milk sugar (lactose) as carbohydrate. They don’t contain starch or maltodextrin.

A follow-on formula (Stage 2) can be served if the baby is at least 6 months old and already gets complimentary food.

The energy content of a follow-on formula hardly differs from Stage 1 or PRE formulas in order to meet the latest EU standards.

Nevertheless, there are important differences, especially with regard to nutrients for which a significantly higher demand exists when the baby is already 6 months or older. Follow-on formulas also have, compared to Stage 1 or PRE formulas, a higher iron content.

A Stage 3 formula can be served if the baby is at least 10 months old.

Preparation & Storage 12 questions
  • What is the expiration date of the formula you offer?

We always ship the freshest batch available, with an expiration date of approximately more than 6 months.

On the product itself, you can find the expiry date written at the bottom of the box in European format DD/MM/YYYY

    (Example: 01.09.2022 = 1st September 2022)

Rest assured, we won’t ship a perishable product that has expired!

  • Can I store bottle feeds to use later?

It is safest to prepare a fresh feed each time one is needed and to consume immediately. This is because prepared feeds provide ideal conditions for bacteria to grow – especially when kept at room temperature.

However, if you need to prepare feeds in advance for use later, they should be prepared in individual bottles, cooled quickly and placed in the refrigerator (no higher than 5ºC). Throw away any refrigerated feed that has not been used within 12 hours. Before using make sure to shake the bottle well and check the temperature of the bottle before feeding. We recommend a drinking temperature of 98.6° F/37° C.

If you do not have a refrigerator it is not safe to prepare feeds in advance – always prepare a fresh feed as it is needed.

Prepare a fresh bottle for each feed. Bacteria can grow rapidly in formula milk kept at room temperature and can grow slowly in the fridge.

  • Why are there different sizes of measuring spoons?

The size of the flakes of infant formula may differ from batch to batch resulting in different specific weights per batch. In order to make sure that a measuring spoon always carries the right amount of formula, the spoon which is included box is in accordance with the specific weight of the formula you’re actually using.

It is therefore indispensable that you always use the spoon which is included in the box of formula you’re currently using.

This guarantees that you prepare a bottle feed with the right amount of formula.

  • Is it necessary to boil the water?

Yes, we recommend that you follow the manufacturer’s directions.

You can use any type of clean water (tap or bottled) to prepare organic formula. To kill bacteria that might be present in municipal water, use tap water that has been boiled for one minute and cooled down to about 50°C or 122°F.  Then, mix the water with formula.

  • Can I mix the formula with breast milk instead of water?

We do not recommend adding extra scoops of milk formula or mixing the powdered milk formula with any other powders or liquids.

Some mothers mix powdered formula with their breast milk in order to increase the calories their baby gets during a feeding. This changes the composition of breast milk and the micro-nutrients become far more concentrated. We recommend following the exact instructions on the formula or on our website and never mix the formula with anything but boiled water.

The formula is designed to be mixed with water in order to make sure that your baby gets the right amount of nutrition per feed.

Furthermore, you would waste valuable breastmilk if your baby cannot finish the bottle.
If you use formula as a supplement, we suggest to give breastmilk first and after that formula as a supplement.

  • How do I prepare the formula?

Just click on the product and you’ll find in English the preparation instructions for this particular product including the nutrition facts.

  • How long can I use the formula after a pouch has been opened?

Once a milk formula pouch has been opened, it is exposed to environmental factors that can affect its quality. To guarantee short-term freshness, we recommend to use a milk formula storage box, or reseal the pouch and restore it in the original cardboard packaging. Storage life varies between manufacturers. Please consume the Holle & Lebenswert formula within 2 weeks after opening the pouch. HiPP recommends not to store an opened pouch for more than 3 weeks. After that time please discard the formula and use a new pouch.

It is recommended to use a calendar or labeling on the pouches as a friendly reminder.

  • How many fl oz or liters can I get from one box of formula?

This depends on the brand and stage you actually want to use. Below please find the approximate qty. per box.

    Holle Stage 1 / Holle PRE Stage/ Holle Goat 1-3 = 100 fl oz / 3 litre

    Holle Stage 2-4 = 140 fl oz / 4.25 litre

    Lebenswert  1-3  = 115 fl oz / 3.50 litre

    HiPP Combiotic 1-3 = 140 fl oz / 4.25 litre

We have also stated in our product descriptions how many fl oz or liters you can approximately get.

  • How long can a prepared bottle be kept at room temperature?

Please discard any prepared or ready-to-feed formula which has been exposed to room temperature after 1 hour.

  • Can I prepare a bottle feed and store it in the fridge for later?

It’s always the best to prepare a fresh bottle of formula each time you feed your baby.

However, we know that there may be situations where a feed needs to be prepared in advance.

The safest way to do this is to prepare individual bottle feeds and put them in the fridge at a temperature of 41°F / 5°C or less immediately after you’ve prepared them.

Use them within 12 hours after they were put in the fridge and discard any feed which has not been consumed within 12 hours.

  • How do I heat up refrigerated bottle feeds?

Take out the bottle of mixed formula from the fridge just before you want to use it.

To heat it up, place it in a bowl filled with warm water or use a bottle-warmer.

Don’t heat it up for more than 15 minutes.

Check the temperature of the bottle feed by dripping a little onto the inside of your wrist. It should feel lukewarm, not hot.

Discard any feed that your child has not taken within two hours.

Don’t use a microwave oven to heat up bottle feeds. Microwaves do not heat evenly so that there’s a high risk of scalding the mouth of your child.

  • How can I prepare formula while travelling?

We always recommend to prepare a fresh feed as you do it at home once it is needed, but that’s not always possible.

    Journeys less than 2 hours

Prepare feeds as usual before you leave and put them in a fridge at 41°F / 5°C or less.

Just before you leave home, take out the prepared feeds from the fridge and put them in an insulated cool bag with ice packs.

When arriving put the feeds back in the fridge and heat them up once they are needed.

Please make sure that these feeds will be consumed within 12 hours after preparation.

    Journeys longer than 2 hours

For journeys longer than 2 hours or when you don’t have the possibility to keep the feeds cold, it is not safe to prepare feeds in advance.

The safest way is to prepare a fresh feed using water which is hotter than 158°F / 70°C.

If you don’t have access to hot water during your journey, we suggest to fill boiled water in a thermos flask and seal it. It remains above 158°F / 70°C for several hours. You can use the water to prepare a bottle feed when it’s needed.

Check in advance how long your thermos flask keeps boiled water above 158°F / 70°C

Please wash and rinse the thermos flask with boiled water before filling it with the boiled water you want to use to make the feeds.

  • My order arrived and boxes are open/damaged! What can I do?

We are terribly sorry! We can assure you the products left our warehouse in a perfect state. Unfortunately, packages are sometimes damaged during their journey, but unless your sealed package of the formula was accidentally opened as well, damage to the box is only cosmetic.
